Hunting the Lamb Killers || Farmer asks for help

  • One of my regular clients kindly passed on my details to another farmer in need of assistance.
So tonight I'm out on a brand new property hunting lamb killers.
"Im losing lambs every night, even in the paddock right beside the house" he said.
After a quick meet n greet and a familiarisation drive around the property, it was time to get to work.
I set up 250m above the mob of sheep where the majority of the killing had been taking place and impatiently waiting for the sun to go down.
As I sat there watching the full moon slowly peek up over the horizon, the first fox of the night made an appearance.
Snaking his way cunningly through the ewes and newborn lambs, I quickly closed the distance on foot, pulled him up with an abrupt "oi" and the 55 grain projectile found its mark. A quick scan around with the thermal and bugger me, there was another one. Less than 30 minutes in and 2 on the deck.
I couldn't have hoped for a better start, especially when you're trying to impress a new client and the pressure is on to get results.
30 minutes later and another fox down then everything went quiet, time to get mobile and check out the rest of the farm.
Stealth and a full moon certainly don't go well together but sometimes you've just gotta play the hand you've been dealt.
Another 7 foxes fell victim to my .223 over the ensuing hours bringing the tally to 10 by nights end.
There's nothing better than getting that phone call the following morning from a very happy farmer that has just seen the pile of dead foxes I left for him.
For those of you interested in the gear I'm running, here it is.
HikMicro Panther PQ50L V2.0 thermal rifle scope
HikMicro Habrok 640 thermal binoculars and HikMicro Condor CQ50L monocular.
Sako 85 Stainless Hunter chambered in .223
Southern Cross Small Arms Q2 Moderator
Bexin ST424C Carbon fibre tripod with Sirui K30X ball head to arca swiss mount
ThermTec Wild 650L on top of the SpyDabot Venom remote control roof mount
    Z-Vision RW6 Red / White Light bar
    T2 fox whistle
If your'e interested in purchasing any gear or just after some expert advice, contact the Team at "Hunt The Night" via the link below.

Thanks again for watching and I look forward to seeing you back here soon.

Have got 40 now over 300 ewes all on foot. I have said it before but I have learnt a lot from your videos. I wonder if you could shoot as well if they were your lambs. My heart rate gets up still if I have a known kiler come back for the rest or seconds.

Foxes are intelligent. One time at work we saw a fox on the road while we were on the lunch 20m away from us. We were shocked how bold the fox was. Meanwhile the electricity went out so we had to use a petrol generator and while the generator was working the fox went behind the house and ki11ed all the chickens. Later that day landlady came to feed the chickens and saw the carnage. We had no idea what happened. Smart animals the foxes are.

I've got a Casio Mudmaster watch with a thermometer in it. I got home at 7 the other morning and the water in the cat's bowl was frozen solid, which is saying something because it's a big stainless kitchen mixing bowl and it was nearly full - so about 4 litres was in it. I hang the watch on the line, go have a shower and come out at 8am and it's -6.7 on the watch. Not bad. The shower head was frozen solid too - I had to take it off, boil the kettle and warm it up before I could wash the stench of death off me before going to bed. That was in central Vic in the Castlemaine area.
last time we had so many frosts like this was 2018 and drought followed. Dunno if that's a predictor this time though.

Looking at getting a couple of scopes but absolutely love that ThermTec Wild 650L on top of the SpyDabot Venom remote control roof mount would work wonders for my Thylacine / Thylacoleo searching here in Victoria. I'll do some research into it. However, what scope gives the best definition and battery life in your opinion (For under $15k) - I was looking at the ATN THOR 5XD 2-20X which I could leave running all night in area I think Thylas live.
